Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Announced
Coming to the Nintendo Switch on November 20th, 2020, the follow-up to the Warriors-based spin-off series travels back to 100 years before the events of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
In a surprise announcement video, Koei Tecmo’s Hyrule Warriors series producer Yosuke Hayashi reveals that it was Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma who suggested telling the story of The Great Calamity as a prequel to Breath of the Wild. And that the Warriors-style gameplay would complement the battles between the kingdom of Hyrule and the forces of Calamity Ganon.
Elsewhere in that video, Aonuma says that he was impressed by how the Hyrule Warriors team had a deep understanding of The Legend of Zelda series when developing the original Hyrule Warriors title for the Nintendo Wii U. Hayashi further elaborates that, unlike that previous title, the Warriors team were able to collaborate with the Zelda team on every step of the process for Age of Calamity.
Though not specifically stated in the video, these collaborations and statements suggest that, unlike the first HYWA game (which took place in “a separate dimension” from the main series canon), HYWA:AOC will actually be a part of the main Zelda timeline.
(Which branch in the timeline, you ask? It’s before wherever Breath of the Wild is- stop asking questions!)
