Kirby Star Allies Preview

Kirby Star Allies is just over two weeks from releasing and from what I have been seeing I’m pretty hyped! The game looks like it’s taking The New Super Mario Bros approach by having four players on the screen at a time. Thankfully it doesn’t look like you can run into each other, so a little less frustrating since no one can jump on your head and send you to your death. Your allies in this game are enemies that you throw a friend heart at to capture as teammates. Enemies have different abilities and attacks that you can combine with weapon’s that Kirby’s has acquired from other enemies. Befriend and ice enemy and combine it with your sword to make an ice sword. You can also combine all four characters to form a wheel of destruction rolling through the level taking out barriers and enemies, this is just the tip of the iceberg. At one point during the Nintendo, Minute Kirby pulled out a vacuum sucked up all the players and then sent them flying through the level bouncing off enemies and clearing blocked paths.

Weapon Combinations

Melee weapons or ranged weapons can all be combined with different elements. Fire, water, electricity, wind or ice can be fused with your weapon to give you a variety attacks. Need to take on a fire enemy? Use water to douse the flame or wind to blow it out, I am getting a little Megaman vibe from this game and I love that! How you build your team will all depend on your preference, if you’re in a level with a lot of ice, make sure someone on your team has fire to combine with. There may be a secret location that a barrier needs to be melted or you may need a rock to smash through it. You can play how you want, test different combinations to see what you like. When combined with water I saw Kirby riding a wave that was taking out the baddies. The video below is one the coolest weapons in the game! You paint a picture of King Dedede he then comes to life and attacks enemies for you.

Not Just Another Kirby Game

Kirby games are often considered more for kids because of the easy difficulty or lack of depth. I feel like on the surface this looks like a simple Kirby game but I’m thinking it may be a deeper experience than we think. Nintendo has a way being able to combine simple and easy while adding loads of depth. Look at Mario Odyssey on the surface its pretty straightforward 3D platformer, but in the right hands Mario can jump and move in ways I didn’t think were possible. I’m not saying we will see that level of depth in this game, but I bring it up because I’ve heard people say this just looks like “another” Kirby Game. We are seeing new mechanics for the series and after paying attention I am pretty stoked. Learning more about this game and Yoshi for the Switch has got me more hyped than I have ever been for either of these series. If you were like me and just writing this one off maybe give it another look. There are plenty of videos on Youtube showcasing gameplay.

The Switches First Nintendo Made Platformer

Kirby will be the first Nintendo made platformer on the system. We’ve seen some great platformers from indie dev’s, but nothing from Nintendo yet. The levels I have seen look very well made with secrets hidden throughout. If you are a completionist you will be searching for hidden puzzle pieces, some behind barriers that will take certain elements to break. You will have to work with different members of your team to unlock everything which adds to the replayability. The look of this game is a mix of modern and classic Nintendo, from the many characters to attacks it all showcases that Nintendo magic.

It’s Time To Try Kirby Again

Even as I write this I can’t believe how excited I am for a Kirby game! As I look back on the Kirby games of the past I can see that this is a series that Nintendo is not afraid to take risks with and try new things. Sometimes it pays off and other times it does not. Kirby Star Allies is a Kirby game at its core with so much more. I’m looking forward to playing this one solo and with my family, I wish online was an option and have heard others that want the same. Maybe the next one? I want to hear from you guys! Is this day one purchase for you? Are you on the fence? Let me know in the comments below.
