The Creative Director of Unravel 2 took to Twitter to explain why the game isn’t on the Nintendo Switch yet. Here’s what Martin Sahlin had to say:
“Just so you all know – it’s not that we’re not aware that Unravel Two would be great on Switch. I mean, they even made it the right colors! But the reality is that a port would take a LOT of work and our small studio doesn’t have the resources at the moment. If we could we would!”
Unravel 2 is being published by EA who for the second year of the Switch’s life cycle isn’t bringing many games to the system. Their sports games are limited to FIFA on Nintendo’s console. Couldn’t EA very easily provide the financial resources to make Unravel 2 a reality on the Switch? The answer is, yes, but there’s more to than that. Sahlin goes on to say:
Hey, they’re EA, they want everything to be on everything 🙂 But making a Switch version would essentially require re-engineering the whole game, so unless we can find some shortcuts, it just costs more than we can afford
The engine they created for the game would take quite a bit of time and resources and they can’t afford it. Could EA financially back the project? Of course, they could, but would they get the return on investment they would want? My guess is that we will see both Unravel games on the Switch at some point if the sequel does well and Switch continues to be successful. EA isn’t some villain here who don’t want the game on Switch. The fact that Unravel is published by EA is an attempt by them to show that they care about games not only money. Gamingbolt.com has a great article about the deal that was made between Coldwood Interactive and EA.
It’s easy to jump to conclusions about EA because they are the whipping boy of the gaming industry, but without them Unravel may not have been featured on the largest stage in the gaming industry, E3. Hopefully, options will present themselves to get these great games to the system they would probably sell the best on, but until then we wait.
Would you love to see Unravel 1 and 2 on the Switch?
