Garage Review

Little Garage of Horrors

Garage, from Tiny Build takes you to a place not many games are willing to take you. The opening cinematic has you kick your way out of the trunk of car only to vomit all over the parking lot. While dazed from head trauma you make your way to a med kit and it brings some much needed clarity as you begin your zombie filled romp through the Garage.

Graphics

A top down, 16 bit shooter that resembles the look of watching a vhs tape on an old CRT television. The pixel art is quite impressive especially when you see explosions that fill 2/3rds the screen. Pixelated blood splatter and body parts will cover the ground in this gritty adventure. The zombies, rats and grotesque bosses are brought to life beautifully, some may invoke the occasional jump scare as kick open a newly found door only to have a zombie right in your face. The game is on the dark side, so you’ll need to fight the urge to play this one at your local park on a sunny day. The dark ascetic of the game can make finding exits or door ways a little frustrating at times, but not frustrating enough to keep me away. Moaning zombies to gunfire this game nails it in the sound department.

Gameplay

Top down, survival horror twin stick shooter game. I’ve spent most the game using the only the left stick, but when precision shots were needed the second stick worked nicely. There are times that you will need to dispose of multiple enemies quickly and missing a shot can be the difference between reloading your last check point or reaching the next one. There’s very little in the way of handholding in this game you wake up in a trunk and start figuring out why. The difficulty continues to ramp up as you progress, with a few areas that I had to repeat over and over again until I figured it out or hit all my shots. Even on the easy difficulty this game is no walk in the park, so be prepared to die a lot. After each death I didn’t feel cheated by the game and wanted to get back in try again. Garage lends it self nicely to picking it up for five minutes or sitting down and knocking out few levels.

Conclusion

Garage is great blend of classic top down shooters and survival horror. While being a little on the dark side and being fairly difficult, the fun gameplay and interesting story kept me coming back. With a $14.99 price tag this game gives you plenty of content to play through. I’m giving Garage 8/10 Power Gloves.
