Mario Day: Favorite Mario Memories?

I can’t see Mario and not think about the years of fond memories spent adventuring or kart racing. The magic of setting up my first NES on Christmas morning and stomping Goombas for the first time. Whether he was refereeing boxing or hitting the links, Mario was in most of the games from my childhood. His humble beginnings of a carpenter at odds with his pet gorilla to rescuing Princess Peach from the clutches of Bowser there is always a new adventure.

My fondest Mario memory

As a kid, my best friend Eric and I were the biggest Mario fans. With the announcement of Super Mario Bros 2, we couldn’t get enough of the Mario Mania. Any took every opportunity to scope out Nintendo Power or catch a TV commercial. Mario’s sprite brought him to life in the sequel. The greatest disappointment for us as kids were the lack of a two-player. Taking turns was fine, but there was something about having a player two on the adventure. He was able to play first, and I remember being so jealous and making him tell me every detail. He passed when we were 19, and any time I see Super Mario Bros 2 artwork or hear the music, I can’t help but think of him. Our love for Mario was what brought us together, and I know we’d still be playing Mario Kart together if he was around.

What’s your fondest Mario memory?

Is there an old friend that Mario brings to mind? A particular time in your life that you look back on fondly? Let me know in the comments below, and I will read the memories on the Nintendo Power Cast this week.

  1. My fondest Mario memory would be receiving my Nintendo 64 on Christmas day with a copy of Super Mario 64 from my sister. Hooked it up that night and took turns with my sisters back and forth. Eventually we came to the agreement of “We’ll switch players once someone gets a game over” to have a bit longer play sessions between each person. Needless to say, they never got another turn after me that night.

  2. Hmmm … Probably watching Mario Bros Super Show growing up as a little younger, listening to the audiobook of Super Mario: How Nintendo Conquered America with a friend while on a road trip from Chicago to Denver, and–of course–inhaling Josh’s Mario as Dedede off stage and on stream–let’s a go!!!
