Crease Yourself and Be Reborn.
Nintendo dropped an announcement trailer and release date for the previously-rumored, new Paper Mario game today, as well as launched the official site for the title.
Paper Mario: The Origami King looks to explore the threat of the folding arts upon the paper Mushroom Kingdom. The origami-based King Olly has wrapped Princess Peach and her castle in his power and one, ever-intrepid, former-plumber must flatten his plans. Joining him on this pulpy quest is a new, origami partner, Olivia, as well as Bowser, his minions, and the Toads.
The trailer highlights the newest ability, the 1,000 Fold Arm, which extend Mario’s arms out to solve puzzles and facilitate other interactions. Even more importantly, however, is that the trailer also shows off the new concentric ring-based battle system. Aligning enemies introduces a puzzle-solving element to battles as you strive to maximize damage to multiple foes.
Also teased at the trailer’s end is a scene of Mario wearing a Samus helmet, which could be either a hint at more Nintendo Easter eggs in the game (as you can already catch glimpses of elsewhere in the room shown) or, if we’re very lucky, maybe hinting at Metroid Prime Trilogy in our future? Or some other installment in the franchise? Wishful thinking, perhaps, but one cannot help but speculate.
Your Wait is Paper Thin.
With a release date of July 17th, 2020, players won’t have to wait long to unfold this new adventure. A pleasant surprise to many, who had speculated that the new Paper Mario game’s release would cap off the build-up of the rumored 3D Mario releases for Mario’s 35th Anniversary this year, not precede it.
Also surprising? Being rescued by a Shy Guy flying a clown car. Nobody expects the Shy Guy In-crease-ition!
