The Main Options
With Super Smash Bros Ultimate just around the corner, a lot of people want to know which controller to use. The Switch has so many options so I’ll do my best help in your controller choice.
The GameCube Controller
The GameCube controller for Smash has been a staple since Melee and continues to reign supreme for most Smash players. This will be my controller of choice going into Super Smash Bros Ultimate because it is the Smash Bros controller. Street Fighter is best played with a fight stick and Smash is best played with a GameCube controller. A wired controller will eliminate input lag so if you plan on playing Smash more than casually plan on playing a wired controller. The form factor is a big draw for me with this controller as well as button and stick layout. Having notches for your for your sticks also make this the first choice for me when it comes to Smash. Keep in mind you will need the GameCube controller adapter to play this on your Switch and the only option is to play docked.
The Switch Pro Controller
The Switch Pro controller is going to be a great choice for Smash and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see it used in competitive play by some new players. This controller has the option to be played wireless or wired, you have to change a setting the Switch’s menu. It also has both bumpers where the GameCube controller only has one. The form factor and button layout on this controller are great but where it differs from the GameCube controller is lack of notches around the sticks. As of writing this, I have played Smash Bros Ultimate with it twice and it will be a solid choice for the game. The button layout is also the same as the Joycon’s so bouncing between handheld and Pro controller will be using similar muscle memory. It’s not a major factor because I bounce between GameCube controller and 2DS XL right now and it’s not a big deal. The Switch Pro controller will be the most versatile option.
The Joycons
The Joycons either in the grip or holding one in each hand will be a decent choice for casual play. If you are going to us the grip I suggest checking out a comfort grip from Power A. These grips are little larger than the standard Switch grip and have a much better feel.
The Rest
The remaining controller options all come from third-party manufacturers and without testing them I cannot recommend them. I have a handful of third-party GameCube controllers on my WiiU and Wii and they feel cheap. If you are looking for some budget options to give your friends when they show up Power A offers a number of wired and wireless options.
