Steam World Quest Hand of Gilgamech Review
Image and Form have done it again! Steam World Quest Hand of Gilgamech has surprised me in more ways than one. I fired up this game with few expectations and was immediately drawn into the world.
The Story Telling
From the start of the game, you’re introduced to the characters, and you can tell they have some history together. They are poking fun at each other, and their conversation is seasoned with the right amount of sarcasm and snark. They immediately piqued my interest but left me curious to know more, to know who they were and who they are. The writing is well done and has left me wanting each time I’ve had to turn it off.
Steam World Quest’s Gameplay
On top of the great storytelling, you have a turn-based RPG that uses a card system for battle. At the beginning of a fight, you are dealt a hand of cards. You then choose three cards for your attacks or defensive moves. If you don’t like a card you can discard it and draw another card. As someone who doesn’t play many turn-based RPG’s I was afraid I wouldn’t like the battle system, but it turns out I quite enjoy it. The element of strategy that it introduces sets it apart from games like Octopath Traveler or Battle Chasers. While traversing the world, you can perform sneak attacks on the enemies to give yourself a slight advantage when the battle begins.
The Artwork and Music
The artwork stays to Image and Forms style with characters resembling paper cutouts. I’m not a fan of the way the animations look with this style, but that’s just my personal preference. All though I don’t love it I can appreciate the work that went into it. The soundtrack compliments the era that the game is set in perfectly. There were times I was waiting for a bard to sing of heroic deeds.
Final Verdict
As stated in the title this is a review in progress because I need a little more time with the game. My final score will be up later this week. Stream World Quest Hand of Gilgamech surprised, impressed, and left me wanting more each time I had put it down.
