Much Less Tacked On
The Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion released tonight and after putting 2 hours into it I’m very impressed! Right off the bat the improved visual and storytelling immediately pull you in. Follow that up with some excellent gameplay and level design and you’ll be “hooked” and possibly “cooked.” The Octo Expansion feels more like a single player campaign than the campaign included with the game.
The story begins with mystery as Cap’n Cuttlefish wakes you, calls for a truce and then explains your memories must be gone because you are no longer trying to fight him. After a few minutes of dialog, you make your way to the subway and begin doing your missions.
Each mission is broken up into a variety of challenges and some are legitimate challenges. I even saw that Game Over screen from running out of currency trying to defeat a horde of Octolings. You will find an excellent balance of levels that range from a breeze to pulling your hair out and questioning your life choices. Joking aside some of these levels are tough but not too tough, they are just right. You will have to spend some time figuring out patterns or finding the fastest routes while keeping an eye on the clock. Be prepared for a challenge, and if it gets too tough you have help just a button click away. After a certain number a deaths there’s some kind of an assist that can be activated, but I refrained from using it because I was loving the challenge.
All in all, I’m very pleased with this expansion so far and can’t wait to jump back in. Have you taken the dive into the Octo Expansion? Are you hooked? Do you plan to pick it up? Let me know in the comments.
