Super Mario Maker 2 Level Creation Tips Part 1

Creating Fun and Challenging Mario Maker 2 Levels

What kind of creator are you? The beauty of Super Mario Maker 2 is your imagination only limits you. Contrary to what I’ve heard from those that say ” I have no imagination.” I am of the mind that if you want to create incredible levels, you need to put the time in. Create crappy levels at first to learn the ins and outs. You don’t have to make masterpieces right off the bat; you do have to stick with it.

Traditional Mario Levels

The first few levels I created in Super Mario Maker were very traditional Mario levels. Nothing super challenging a few holes, a handful of enemies, and few power-ups. With a goal of fun, the level doesn’t have to be infuriating to the player. There is a level of players in the community, so there will always be a place for your levels. Think about some of your favorite levels from Super Mario 3 or Super Mario World take some inspiration from them. Play through those games while you wait for Super Mario Maker 2 to release.

Fun level creation checklist.

  • Break your level into sections.
  • Opening section: create simple challenges and a couple of power-ups.
  • Second section: increases the difficulty with challenging jumps and more enemies.
  • Third section: add some verticality to the level or pipe into the underground include coins or more power-ups, some fun pickups. Reward the player for completing section two.
  • Fourth section: add a secret Super Star or Yoshi add enemies that are easy to defeat with the power-up or difficult if they miss the power up.
  • Fifth section: The final goal. If it’s standard level, put a couple challenging jumps before the flag. If it’s a dungeon level, create your boss fight.

Getting creative.

After you have created the level, it’s time to get creative. You have laid the foundation now have some fun. The more you can break down your Super Mario Maker 2 levels, the easier it becomes to make exceptional levels. Now is the time to start tweaking and adding finishing touches. Maybe add a secret area accessed by a vine plant or add a clown car with fireballs to shoot some flying enemies out the air. Perhaps you create flying level similar to Super Mario Land.
