Nintendo In 2020: Mario Kart 9? [Talking Point]

What Games Will Nintendo Release In 2020?

This question came up during the stream this weekend and I think it’s a good one. What will Nintendo release in 2020? All the of the heavy hitters will have been released in the first three years except for one, Mario Kart.

Mario Kart 9 In 2020?

I believe Mario Kart 9 will be out next year and we will see it teased at E3 this year. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has dominated in sales and its five years old. It was too good of a game not rerelease on the Switch and it has paid off big time.

What I want From Mario Kart 9

My hope is that Mario Kart 9 will get the Smash Bros Ultimate treatment with all tracks, battle tracks and racers together for the first time. On top of all the returning tracks, we need to see the usual 16 new tracks. I would also like to see continued support with themed track packs. Give me StarFox, Kirby, and Metroid. After the inclusion of Zelda, Splatoon, and Animal Crossing anything seems possible.

Do You Think Mario Kart 9 Happens In 2020?

Am I crazy for thinking Mario Kart 9 will be releasing in 2020? I want to hear your thoughts and I will read the responses on the Nintendo Power Cast tonight.

  1. In 2020, we will see Pikmin 4, a new Donkey Kong Country game, a new Mario Golf, a new Mario Baseball, Octopath 2, and Star Fox (Ubisoft). And just for fun, Duck Hunt 99.

    • I’d like to see an entirely new dk game. I’d love for more wii u ports. Super Mario 3D world looks really good. Don’t judge me because I’m part of the 99.9% population that never owned a wii U. My biggest title is love to see is…. Drum roll….. ARMS 2! And a special shout out to everyone in your discord for the thoughts and prayers for me through a difficult time.

  2. Hey man Andrew here. Mario Kart 9 would be a dream. I wonder how the smart phone game Mario Kart Tour will affect when we see a new Mario Kart. What if Nintendo took a year to include other Nintendo titles more head on in a racing game. What I mean is a game that could be like a “Nintendo Kart”. We would see tracks from all different Nintendo franchises. Characters with customizable karts to mix and match. What if it was more like F-Zero? Then it would jump past the Mario Kart theme and be an overall Nintendo racing game. “N-Zero”! Nintendo Land was a fun WiiU game. I could see menus in the game being similar to something we would see in an all encompassing Nintendo racer. Thanks man! Keep your head up and keep on keein’ on.

    Cheers!

  3. My guess is we do see a new Mario Kart before early 2021. So I don’t think you are crazy saying it would be out in 2020. What I want in MK9 would be “custom” championships, and online Time Trials. In other words, you could setup a “Time Trial Attack”, give the “room code” to your community, and see who finishes on top after a set period of time. I believe it would bring some competitiveness to Kart.

Also in 2020, I hope we are getting a new Mario Golf. I really think we are due.

  4. I think we’ll get an announcement for Smash DLC fighter packs 6-10. Smash is selling so well and has such high acclaim, it only makes sense to keep filling it with DLC that people will buy.
I bet we also get another Link’s Awakening style remake. Just for fun, let’s say it’s the Oracle trilogy as one game: Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons, and the unreleased Mystical Seed of Courage.
Also, Prime trilogy, new Mario sports game, and Tic Tac Toe 99 🤣

  5. I’d love a new Mario Kart game in the same vein as Smash Ultimate but I feel it’s further out then 2020 if it happens, 2021 maybe?

I imagine we’ll probably see something along the lines of a Mario Golf, Donkey Kong Country, Pikmin 4/Collection & Metroid Prime Trilogy in 2020. I”m sure they’ll have some games no one expects as they usually do (Star Fox Grand Prix?!)

  6. I think mario kart 9 releasing in 2020 is totally realistic. Releasing it on the heels of mario kart tour would be a perfect way to promote it and Nintendo has already made it clear that they’re not in the mobile business just to milk cash out of people with micro transactions. I would love it if mario kart got the “ultimate treatment” and I hope that we’ll at least see some new items from the non-mario francises that are present, like a pitfall seed from animal crossing or a hook-shot from Zelda.

  7. I dont think we will see Mario Kart 9 in 2020, If we do it will be late in the year. MK 8 is still moving off shelves pretty well. They are definitely working on it though. A new DK maybe but I think it will be a year of remastered older games. with maybe sa brand new franchise. Or Arms 2 lol2

  8. We need a custom robo reboot eternal darkness 2 a new f zero game and star Fox also Metroid prime 4 will be delayed to 2020 lmao

  9. I don’t think we’ll get Mario Kart 9 for a very long time. There’s never been more than one MK game on a system before and, with the Switch essentially rebooting a lot of Wii U releases, MK8D is effectively the “new” MK game for the Switch for most people who own the system.

Additionally, with MK8D selling so well, there’s no incentive to release MK9 when DLC for MK8D would sell much, much more.

You have to kind of look at it this way, IMO: MK8D is helping push systems. And by being the “pack-in” game it has a huge install base now- many who only got the game within the last year. They have no incentive to upgrade to MK9 when they “just got” MK8D.

Because of that, MK9 would likely not sell as well as it otherwise could. As a result, I suspect we won’t see MK9 until 2021/2022 (where it can give the switch a late-console-life boost) or even as late as the Switch’s successor (whatever it may be- Switch 2, something new, etc).

But MK8D DLC? Definitely within the next year or so. They’ll be able to exploit the huge install base that the MK8D bundles helped enhance.

  10. Looks like this has already been on the podcast, but I will still add my thoughts ☺️ For 2020 I wish they would announce a Super Mario Sunshine 2 and/or Super Mario Galaxy 3. I’ve had so much fun with these games that I can only imagine where they would take each series. I don’t see either of these happening, but it is my hope. I honestly DO see them announcing a new Mario Kart for a 2020 release. We’ve had the current Mario Kart on 2 consoles now so I think it’s about time for a new one. I think it would be cool if they added in an 8 bit inspired track; something similar to Octopath Traveler on the Switch. Maybe Bayonetta? Or Metroid? The options for them could be endless. Whatever the case, I do hope they make Mario Kart more of a competitve esport in the future!
