5 ways to read your opponent
- How do they get up after being knocked down on the stage?
- Do they roll forward or back?
- What’s the best way for you to punish their habit? Grab combo, smash attack, etc.
- How do they recover while on the ledge?
- Watch for rolls and normal get-ups and learn the best position to punish recovery.
- If your oppenent uses attack recovery often you need to shield and punish.
- If your opponent uses jump to recover you may be able to punish with Nair, Fair or Up Air.
- How do they recover off stage?
- Do they double jump early and recover high? Punish with a spike or any aerial followed by projectiles to gimp them.
- If they recover high again after punishing their high recovery you can usually bait out an air dodge or up B which are both highly punishable due to landing lag. Be careful to avoid the up B attack by jumping toward your opponent then double jumping away.
- If they recover low you can knock them into the stage by dropping off the stage and landing a back air or punish with projectiles
- If you get the timing right you can land an F smash right as they grab the stage if they are recovering low you may need to angle it down.
- Watch for patterns in your opponent’s attacks and exploit them
-
- The more you play the game and play as other characters you can learn how they approach and how to counter it.
- You may find that some people rely too heavily on one move and have nothing to fall back on if they can’t use that move.
- Almost every character will have landing lag when they use their up B attack that means you have to punish this.
- If they are looking for the grab spot dodge or roll behind them to punish the missed grab
Â
- Watch how your opponent reacts to you and your moves and bait them into your traps
-
- How do they react to your projectiles? If they jump toward you how can you punish that?
- If you see them shield most projectiles or attacks can you get in for a grab?
- Play cat and mouse with your opponent until you see an opening. Mix up your attacks and movement so they don’t begin to read you.
