Patrick and Mark have a love for all things Nintendo, and that love shows in two weekly podcast episodes of Nintendo Cartridge Society.
The Format
The Tuesday podcast features the news of the week, upcoming releases, what Patrick and Mark have been playing, and other recurring segments. They’ll even set aside a John Cage-inspired segment of a non-Nintendo topic for 4 minutes 33 seconds.
The Thursday podcast is a deep dive into a Nintendo topic, such as a ranking of the best Nintendo music or a draft of Nintendo characters to place in an RPG. One of my favorites is a ranking of Zelda overworlds (September 19, 2019). Fans of the show are encouraged to submit feedback for these Thursday topics, and the hosts do a great job of incorporating or responding to all of it. These episodes are more evergreen than the news episodes, and are worth a look back if the topic interests you. Episodes are well-labeled, so you can easily pick what episodes are worth your time.
The Takeaways
Nintendo Cartridge Society’s shows are well-edited, the sound quality is great, and the theme song and music cues are stellar. But perhaps the greatest strength of Nintendo Cartridge Society is the hosts’ humor and improvisational backgrounds. While Patrick and Mark work from an outline, they will occasionally go on brief and funny tangents. Episodes are recorded in the same room, which creates a natural conversational tone and allows for banter that might not be achieved in a different setting. Overall, Nintendo Cartridge Society provides an upbeat, polished Nintendo podcast experience that is worth a listen.
