Super Mario Maker 2 Tips: Shell Jumps

Learning Shells Jumps In Super Mario Maker 2 UPDATED

Are you ready to take on expert and super expert in Super Mario Maker 2? You will need to learn the shell jump and many other techniques to tackle some of the crazy levels that people design. I have been practicing shell jumps, P-switch jumps, and other item jumps on my 2DS XL in preparation for the sequel. I have created some elementary practice courses that will help teach you muscle memory for each of these jumps. Let’s take a look at these Super Mario Maker 2 tips now.

Shell Jump

In the game styles where Mario can hold a shell, you will encounter an area where you need to perform a shell jump. Timing the jump and where to place the shell will depend on the level design.

Basic Shell Jump: While holding a shell, kick it into a surface, so it ricochets back allowing Mario to jump off it.

  • Set up a stage with a tall pipe on the right that you need to shell jump to get over.
  • On the left, create a platform with a Koopa on it, grab his shell jump towards the pipe.
  • Release Y to kick the shell right before the apex of your jump.
  • Trial and error will determine where you need to start your jump.

Another Basic Shell Jump: Use a shell to traverse a spike bed or other hazards.

  • Create a stage with a bed of spikes that span further than Mario’s jump.
  • Place a pipe at the far the right allowing the shell will ricochet back.
  • Kick the shell onto the spikes and as it returns from the pipe, use it as a makeshift platform to complete the jump.
  • Timing your jump is key here, so you hit the shell without touching the spikes.

Midair Shell Jump: Use a shell to extend Mario’s jump by jumping off a shell in midair. (I have yet to replicate this in Super Mario Maker 2)

  • Create an area with a jump that too far for Mario to complete.
  • With a shell in hand run and jump
  • Without releasing the jump button just before the apex of the jump flick left on the d-pad.
  • Immediately press and hold right on the D-pad and release the Y button.
  • If done correctly Mario will jump off the shell midair extending his jump.
  • Midair Shell Jump is one the hardest moves to pull off in the game, so practice it often.

Muscle memory and practice.

Create these stages and practice these shell jumps to acquire the necessary muscle memory. Learn the nuisances of the moves so you will be able to pull them off in the toughest levels the game has to offer. Let me know what you think of part one of the Super Mario Maker 2 tips guide. Part 2 will cover P-Switch jumps, Spring Jumps, Pow Block jumps, and Spin Jumps with an item.
